“India’s Chances of Reaching World Test Championship Final If Brisbane Test Against Australia Gets Washed Out”
How India Can Still Qualify for the World Test Championship Final If Brisbane Test Is Washed Out
The battle for spots in the World Test Championship (WTC) final is intensifying, with four teams—South Africa, India, Australia, and Sri Lanka—still in the race. South Africa currently leads the WTC table, followed by Australia and India in second and third places, respectively. India and Australia are locked in a five-match series, with the scores tied 1-1 after two Tests. South Africa, meanwhile, will play two Tests against Pakistan at home starting on December 26.
Australia has additional Tests scheduled against Sri Lanka after this series, but the weather at the Gabba in Brisbane has caused disruption in the ongoing third Test between India and Australia, as play was abandoned on Day 1 due to poor conditions. The forecast for the rest of the Test is not promising, and there is a real chance that the match may end in a draw.
In such a case, the series will remain tied at 1-1 with two matches left in Melbourne and Sydney. So, how can India qualify for the WTC final if the Brisbane Test produces no result?
India’s Qualification Scenarios:
- India Wins Both Remaining Tests (Melbourne and Sydney)
If India wins the last two Tests of the series, they will secure a place in the WTC final, regardless of any other results. - India Wins the Series 2-1
If India wins the series 2-1, they will need Sri Lanka to avoid being whitewashed by Australia in their series. - India Draws the Series 2-2
If the series ends in a 2-2 draw, Sri Lanka must defeat Australia in their series, no matter the margin. - India Draws the Series 1-1
If the series ends 1-1, Sri Lanka must either draw or beat Australia in their series for India to qualify. - India Loses the Series
If India loses the series by any margin, they will be eliminated from WTC final contention.
Test Update:
On Day 1 of the Brisbane Test, Australia finished on 28-0, with Usman Khawaja unbeaten on 19 and Nathan McSweeney on four. India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, won the toss and opted to field. Only 13.2 overs were bowled before play was suspended due to weather, disappointing the large crowd in attendance.
To make up for lost time, the match will resume at 5:20 AM IST, 30 minutes earlier than originally scheduled. A total of 98 overs can be bowled on Day 2, weather permitting.
