Ex-Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi Indicted on Corruption Charges

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were formally indicted in a new corruption case on Thursday. This case, the third corruption reference against the couple, centers on the alleged purchase of an expensive Bulgari jewelry set at a significantly reduced price. According to reports, the couple is accused of benefiting from the purchase of a necklace, earrings, bracelets, and rings, which resulted in a major loss to the national treasury.

This latest development follows just one week after Khan and other senior leaders of his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), were charged in connection with the May 9 protests, which included an attack on the army’s General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. Despite being granted bail in the case by the Islamabad High Court last month, Khan remains in custody due to multiple charges stemming from his arrest on August 5 of the previous year.

On Thursday, Special Court Central-I Judge Shahrukh Arjumand conducted the proceedings at Adiala Jail, where Khan was presented. Bushra Bibi, who is out on bail, attended the hearing with her legal counsel. The couple has denied all corruption charges, and the court has scheduled a hearing for December 18 to record the testimonies of prosecution witnesses.

This marks Khan’s seventh indictment, with previous charges including two Toshakhana cases, a corruption case involving 190 million Pakistani Rupees, and charges related to the GHQ attack. Khan and his wife also faced accusations in the cipher case and the Iddat case, but they were acquitted in both.

In the ongoing trial related to the PKR 190 million case, the couple testified before an accountability court earlier this week.
