Petition for Fresh UK General Election Surpasses 1.7 Million Signatures Amid Discontent with Labour Government

A petition calling for a new general election in the UK has garnered over 1.7 million signatures as dissatisfaction with the Labour government grows. The petition criticizes the government’s policies and post-election performance, with many feeling it has failed to deliver on promises made before the last election.

The petition, started by Michael Westwood, the owner of Britain’s “cheapest pub,” claims that the current Labour government has strayed from its manifesto commitments. Westwood expressed his surprise when Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, reposted a message about the petition’s success. Musk, who helped boost the petition’s visibility, wrote, “The General Election petition has now DESTROYED the 200k target within 6 hours… The British people are about to completely humiliate the Labour Party.”

As of the latest update, the petition had reached 1,771,423 signatures and continues to grow. Under UK guidelines, petitions with over 10,000 signatures receive a response from the government, and those with over 100,000 signatures are eligible for parliamentary debate.

Westwood, who runs the Wagon and Horses pub where pints cost just $2.90, said the government’s actions no longer align with the promises made before the election. He believes that the public, inspired by recent political movements in the U.S., is ready to stand together and demand change.

Meanwhile, an Ipsos poll reveals a sharp decline in support for the Labour government, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s approval rating plummeting. Nearly half (49%) of the public now views the Labour Party unfavorably, trailing the Conservative Party by three points. Additionally, 40% of Britons feel they are worse off since Labour came to power, and 56% believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.
